QUESTION 270 (6 marks)
A 4 kg block is initially at rest on a smooth plane inclined at above the horizontal. A rope pulls at above the plane with tension 18 N. Use m s. The stimulus shows the geometry only; it contains no force arrows.
a)[3 marks]
Draw a labelled free-body diagram of the block. Make all force arrows originate at the centre node of the block.
b)[3 marks]
Determine the normal reaction and the acceleration along the plane. State the direction of acceleration.

ANSWER
(a) Weight 40 N vertically downward; reaction normal away from the plane; tension 18 N at above the uphill direction. (b) N; acceleration m s downhill.
Worked solution
(a) The block experiences gravity, the plane reaction and rope tension. A smooth plane has no friction force. See the solution diagram. Resolve components relative to the plane, not relative to the rope.
(b) Normal acceleration is zero, so . Uphill force is N. Dividing by 4 gives m s uphill, i.e. m s downhill (three decimals). A positive reaction confirms continued contact.
Equivalent justified methods accepted; respect any requested proof method.
Exact values unless specified. Sketches assessed by mathematical features, not artistic quality.
Part a: Draw and label weight vertically downward.
Part a: Draw and label the normal reaction perpendicular to the plane.
Part a: Draw tension in the stated direction from the centre node.
Part b: Resolve normal forces and obtain R.
Part b: Resolve the net along-plane force.
Part b: Divide by mass and state downhill acceleration.
