QUESTION 94 (6 marks)
A mixture initially contains 0.0100 mol L⁻¹ each of Cu²⁺ and Mg²⁺. Hydroxide is slowly added at with negligible volume change. ; ; . Ignore complex ions.
a) Calculate the pH at which each hydroxide just begins to precipitate. [4 marks]
b) Choose a pH strictly between the two thresholds that precipitates copper hydroxide but not magnesium hydroxide. Justify. [2 marks]

Cu(OH)₂ begins near pH 5.17; Mg(OH)₂ near pH 9.63. A pH such as 7.0 selectively precipitates copper hydroxide in this model.
At onset . Copper gives M, pH=5.1712. Magnesium gives M, pH=9.6276. At pH 7 the copper ion product exceeds its Ksp while magnesium’s does not.
- Uses [OH⁻] = √(Ksp/[metal]). [1 marks]
- Calculates copper threshold [OH⁻]. [1 marks]
- Calculates copper onset pH 5.17. [1 marks]
- Calculates magnesium onset pH 9.63. [1 marks]
