Butan-2-ol; acid-catalysed hydration with water/steam; acidified dichromate and heat; oxidation.
Markovnikov hydration puts OH on carbon 2, giving a secondary alcohol. A heated acidified oxidant converts this alcohol into a ketone.
- Identifies butan-2-ol. [1 marks]
- Specifies water/steam for hydration. [1 marks]
- Specifies acid catalyst/suitable heat. [1 marks]
- Specifies acidified dichromate or permanganate with heat. [1 marks]
- Classifies alcohol-to-ketone step as oxidation. [1 marks]
