QUESTION 231 (5 marks)
Fixed charges and lie left and right of O, respectively. P is directly above O. Use .
a)[3 marks]
Determine the resultant electric field at O due to the two fixed charges.
b)[2 marks]
Could any choice of a third point charge placed at P make the resultant electric field at O zero? Explain.

ANSWER
(a) to the right. (b) No. Its field at O is vertical and cannot cancel the rightward horizontal component.
Worked solution
(a) At O, the positive charge's field points away from it, to the right, and the negative charge's field points towards it, also right. Each has magnitude . They add to rightward.
(b) A point charge's field at O lies along the line joining that charge to O. For a charge at P this line is vertical, regardless of its sign or magnitude. It adds no horizontal component, so the existing nonzero horizontal field remains.
Equivalent physically justified methods and consistent equivalent units accepted.
Displayed decimals are model answers; accept appropriate significant figures and consistent rounding from stated constants.
Part a: Determine both field directions.
Part a: Calculate the individual equal field magnitudes.
Part a: Add the fields and state the resultant direction.
Part b: Identify the possible field direction from a charge at P as vertical.
Part b: Explain why the existing nonzero horizontal component cannot be cancelled.
