Use z=a+biz=a+bi and w=c+diw=c+di, where a,b,c,d∈Ra,b,c,d\in\mathbb R, to prove ∣z−w∣2=∣z∣2+∣w∣2−2Re⁡(zw‾).|z-w|^2=|z|^2+|w|^2-2\operatorname{Re}(z\overline w).
